Advent in Reykjavík starts this weekend

We proudly present the schedule for the first weekend of Advent in Reykjavik.

From 14 December the city has been getting into the Christmas spirit with Christmas lights and decorations, so all guests and residents can enjoy the essence of Advent.

27 November                   Winter Woods at the City Hall

The official opening of the Winter Woods at the City Hall will be on Friday, 27 November at 15:00.  Everyone is welcome on the opening day to come and enjoy some music, cookies and hot chocolate. The theme of the Winter Woods this Christmas will be dedicated to women, who are celebrating, this year, the 100th anniversary of Icelandic women’s right to vote.  There will also be several Christmas events within the Winter Woods during Advent, which will be advertised at a later date.

28 November                   Christmas Village in Hafnarfjörður Opens

The Christmas Village has been evolving over the years and now the whole downtown area of Hafnarfjörður becomes one big Christmas Village during Advent. This year the area will span from the Hafnarfjörður Museum to the old fish factory’s ice house. Hafnarfjörður residents, local companies and town alliances of various kinds, will participate in making the expansion of the Christmas Village happen. As usual, there will be a Christmas market at the Christmas houses on the Þórsplan plaza. The market will be open from 12:00 – 17:00 on Saturdays and Sundays until Christmas, from 18:00 – 21:00 on Tuesday 22 December and Wednesday 23 December.

28 November                    Christmas Market at Elliðavatnsbær in Heiðmörk

The annual Crafts & Design Christmas market and the Christmas tree sale in Heiðmörk woods, located on the outskirts of Reykjavík, will be open every weekend from 28 November until Christmas, from 11:00 – 16.00. There will be readings and concerts at the cafeteria every day, with accordion players and choirs.  Each day at 14:00 a small bonfire will be lit outside and readings for children will take place. One of the Yule Lads might even stop by!

28 - 29 November           Advent festival in Kópavogur

This year, the Advent festival will have a new location in the field by the Kópavogur culture houses. The schedule for the festival will take place in the culture houses on both days. The Advent festival schedule begins at 13:00, 28 November, with a crafts and design market at Gerðuberg culture house and a Christmas market, which is in the field next to the culture houses.  Artists from Hamraborg and Auðbrekka invite guests and pedestrians to stop by at their workshops.

The lighting of the Christmas tree will take place at 16:00 on Saturday, followed by a concert of traditional Icelandic Christmas songs and dance. The Yule Lads and the Christmas Cat will stop by and other Christmas creatures will also be around. The annual leaf-bread making sessions at Gjábakki centre for the elderly, will begin at 13:00 on Saturday, along with the opening of the crafts market. Refreshments will be available to purchase.

On Sunday 29 November at the Kópavogur library and the Gerðasafn workshop, guests are invited to attend our Christmas origami-making sessions. The Christmas play ‘Ævintýrið um Augastein’ will be shown at 17:00 at Salurinn.
