A Blazing Festival Year Ahead!
More festivals than ever, including a few brand new ones, will set their mark on Reykjavik’s cultural calendar this year. Make sure you catch at least one of the highlights of this year’s event calendar:
Museum Night – new! 12 February.
All of Reykjavík's museums stay open until past midnight to host events and entertainment of all kinds, including theatre, music and dance in some of the city’s most stunning architectural surroundings and amazing galleries.
Food & Fun 24 – 28 February.
Come along to the annual Food and Fun festival and savour cuisine prepared by celebrity chefs from around the world plus learn more about Icelandic cooking and ingredients. Selected restaurants around Reykjavík will feature festival menus created and prepared by world-famous chefs. www.foodandfun.is
DesignMarch + Fashion Festival – new! 18 – 21 March.
DesignMarch is a four-day feast featuring a wealth of events, interesting lectures and fascinating exhibitions reflecting the diversity in Icelandic design. Many of Iceland’s most prominent fashion designers have established the Reykjavík Fashion Festival, which will take place for the first time in Iceland’s capital 19-20 March, in cooperation with individuals from the music scene. www.icelanddesign.is / www.rff.is
Children’s Culture Festival – new! 9 – 25 April.
The first festival dedicated to children’s culture, the aim is to inspire creativity and show-off their talents through various activities and exhibitions that both parents and children will find fun and interesting.
Reykjavík Art Festival 12 May –5 June.
The Reykjavik Arts Festival celebrates its 40th anniversary and will feature concerts, dance, theatre as well as a wide range of Icelandic and international photography exhibitions. www.artfest.is
Festival of the Sea 5- 6 June.
A tug of war competition, a boat race and a collection of unusual sea creatures are some of the attractions at this festival held by Reykjavík Harbour.
Reykjavík Gay Pride 5 – 8 August.
This colourful event attracts thousands of people every year and features music, dancing and a huge street parade. www.gaypride.is
Reykjavík Jazz Festival 14 – 29 August.
The annual Reykjavík Jazz Festival is a chance to check out some excellent international and Icelandic jazz bands. www.reykjavíkjazz.is
Reykjavík Culture Night 21 August.
Culture Night is Iceland’s largest cultural festival, with thousands of people strolling the streets of Reykjavík to witness all manner of exciting cultural events. www.menningarnott.is
Reykjavík International Film Festival 23 September – 3 October.
Catch the cream of recent festival films, see dozens of amazing flicks from the world’s youngest and most talented directors, meet foreign film pioneers and, if you’re lucky, see the shimmering Northern lights. www.riff.is
Imagine Peace Tower 9 October – 8 December.
A work of art by Yoko Ono dedicated to the memory of John Lennon, every year the Imagine Peace Tower shines between Lennon’s birthday and the day of his death. www.videy.com
Iceland Airwaves 14 – 20 October.
What started as a showcase for local DJs has evolved into a full-blown, international music festival that presents the hottest new bands. www.icelandairwaves.is
