Elena Poniatowska in Reykjavík

September 2012 is a season of world literature in Reykjavík and on Monday and Tuesday, September 10th and 11th we will get to know one of Mexico‘s greatest writers, Elena Poniatowska.

Forlagið Publishing in Reykjavík has just published Poniatowska‘s novel Here‘s to You Jesusa (Hasta no verte Jesús mío) in Icelandic translation, and on that occasion the writer visits Reykjavík this fall. There will be a writer‘s evening with Poniatowska at Iðnó Theatre by the Reykjavík City Lake on Monday, September 10th at 8 pm, and the following day a seminar on literary translation and the work of Elena Poniatowska will be held at the Nordic House in Reykjavík. The former program will be in Icelandic and the latter in English and Spanish (see further below).

Elena Poniatowska (born 1932) is one of Mexico‘s best known authors. She writes fiction as well as articles and non-fiction books about social issues. She has written exstensively on human rights, the social status of women and the poor. Her novel about the woman Jesúsa, first published in 1969, has been reissued in Mexico close to fourty times in Mexico and translated to numerous languages.
