Oslo Christmas tree at Austurvöllur

The Oslo tree

The lighting of the Christmas tree at Austurvellir on the first Sunday in Advent, the 3rd of December this year, marks the beginning of the Christmas city of Reykjavík, but the tree is picked up in the Norwegian grove in Heiðmörk. More than half a century since the tree was lit for the first time, the event is reminiscent of decades of friendship between Reykjavík and the city of Oslo.

Christmas decorations from the charity for the disabled adorn the Christmas tree every year. It combines Icelandic cultural heritage, design, and important issues. The city of Reykjavík has supported the project from the beginning, but the previously mentioned decorations have been the only decoration on the Oslo tree in addition to the Christmas lights.
